Discover how intraoral scanners improve accuracy, patient comfort and dental lab workflows. Expert insights from John Bevan, Director of S4S Dental.

1. Digital dentistry has evolved rapidly over the last decade. From your perspective as a Dental Technician and Director, what has been the biggest change you've witnessed?
The biggest change has undoubtedly been the shift from analogue to digital. Ten years ago, our benches were filled with physical impressions; today, digital scans are becoming the norm. It’s transformed everything - from speed and communication to predictability and, most importantly, the patient experience.

2. Why do you believe intraoral scanners have become one of the most important pieces of equipment in modern dental practice?
Intraoral scanners have become the gateway to modern digital dentistry. They connect the practice directly with the laboratory, treatment planning and manufacturing, creating a seamless digital journey that’s faster, more efficient and ultimately more predictable for both clinicians and patients.

3. Many dentists are still using conventional impressions successfully. What advantages does digital scanning offer over traditional techniques?
Digital scanning takes many of the frustrations out of traditional impressions. It’s more comfortable for patients, errors can be spotted and rescanned instantly, and cases reach the laboratory at the click of a button.
The result is a faster, more accurate and consistent workflow from chair to lab!

4. How does a digital scan improve communication between the dentist and the dental laboratory?
Digital scans put the dentist and technician on the same page from the very start. We receive the case instantly, can review it and provide feedback before manufacturing begins, and collaborate around the exact same digital model.
That means clearer communication, fewer misunderstandings and, ultimately, better results for the patient.

5. From a technician's perspective, what are the most common issues you see with conventional impressions that digital scans help eliminate?
From a technician’s perspective, traditional impressions can come with a few unwanted surprises - voids, bubbles, distortion, unclear margins or even damage in transit.

Digital scanning removes many of these variables, giving us cleaner, more reliable information instantly and without the postal wait!

6. Patients often comment on how much they dislike impressions. How has digital scanning improved the overall patient experience?
Patients generally find scanning quicker and more comfortable - there is less discomfort compared with traditional impressions.

Patients often appreciate being able to see a digital representation of their teeth, it helps create confidence and engagement in treatment planning.

7. Have you noticed a difference in the fit and accuracy of appliances produced from digital scans compared with conventional impressions?
Yes, particularly when good scanning protocols are followed.
Digital scans provide more predictable data and reduce variables associated with impression materials - we often see improved first-time fit and reduced remakes which is great for the patient experience.

8. Many clinicians worry about the learning curve. How quickly do most dentists adapt to digital scanning once they begin using it?
Most clinicians become comfortable surprisingly quickly. Basic scanning competency can often be achieved within days. As with any technology, confidence grows through regular use, but the learning curve is far less daunting than many anticipate!

9. What advice would you give to a practice considering investing in its first intraoral scanner?
Focus on support, training and workflow integration rather than simply purchase price. Consider how the scanner connects to laboratories and software platforms, and choose technology that is open, future-proof and backed by strong training and support.

10. Digital workflows are often described as being more efficient. Where do you see the greatest time savings for both dentists and laboratories?
Good question!…

  • Cases reach the laboratory instantly

  • Reduced chairside time for adjustments and retakes

  • Faster treatment planning and communication,

  • Fewer remakes and fewer appointments required to complete treatment..I could honestly list more!
