Hawley Retainer

IMG 0563

Hawley retainers are by far the most popular type of post treatment orthodontic retainer. The custom made retainer is designed to hold the teeth in their final position after fixed orthodontic brackets and archwires have been removed. A Hawley retainer is made by having impressions taken by a dentist and will have a labial bow (a thin wire holding the front teeth in position). It has two wire adams clasps on the posterior teeth. An acrylic baseplate that sits in the palate holds the wire and teeth in position.

Rationale

  • Post Orthodontic Treatment Retention
  • Minor tooth movements can be achieved for final treatment adjustments

Construction requirements

  1. Upper and lower impression in alginate
