Maxillary Expansion
Maxillary Expansion Appliances also known as Rapid Maxillary Expanders are extremely effective appliances in achieving lots of arch expansion in a very short time. They can be used for adults but ae more commonly used in growing children and teens. The treatment length is very quick mainly due to the fact that the appliance is cemented in place. There are a few types of Expansion appliances, most aim to achieve upper jaw widening.
Rationale
- Creating large amounts of expansion quickly
- Creating space during development of the jaws for the permanent teeth to erupt
- Widening the upper jaw in cross bite cases
- To increase space in the arch to prevent the need for extraction of teeth prior to fixed appliance therapy

- Upper and lower impression in alginate
- ICP bite registration
- Study Models should be taken for Pre-& Post treatment records

Expansion appliances have been used by orthodontists for many years. The appliances require very little adjustment by the Clinician and the treatment time is very quick when the patient adjusts the screw correctly. Expansion appliances are also known as; Active Expansion Appliances, Rapid Maxillary Expanders, R.M.E., Arch Expanders
