The Cost Of Snoring: Help Keep Your Patients Out Of The Divorce Courts
As many dental practitioners have discovered first hand, patients with snoring problems are suffering disastrous consequences as a result of their snoring habits which are caused by lifestyle choices such as drinking alcohol and smoking. A patient’s sleep can be interrupted countless times a night and much needed rest is sometimes out of the question.

According to a recent survey, a massive 80% of couples resorted to sleeping separately to escape the noise[1]. Four out of ten couples said they thought that snoring had adversely affected the quality of their relationship[2]. It is a dire situation to be faced with and snoring can create a severe strain on a patient’s relationship at home. It is a problem that desperately needs a solution.
There are various behavior modifications that a General Medical Practitioner might suggest, however dentists are ideally placed to help these patients and their long-suffering partners, by providing a much more practical solution to the problem. Mandibular advancement splints are extremely effective, a quicker fix and can be one of the steps on the way to longer term lifestyle changes such as weight loss, stopping smoking and reducing alcohol consumption.
By attending Dr Ama Johal’s popular seminar ‘Snoring – A Role for the GDP’ dentists are given an overview of sleep related breathing disorders, provided with screening methods for assessing patients and clinical skills to prescribe mandibular advancement appliances in line with GDC and Dental Protection Ltd requirements.
